FORT WORTH, TX --  Squad cars still surround the Ft. Worth hospital where Sgt. Shane Drake is recovering from surgery. The veteran cop was wounded Thursday night in a shootout at this house on Hildrig Drive.

Cops were called by a mother who wanted a welfare check on her adult son who was locked in the bedroom. Ft. Worth police say when they tried to enter they were greeted by gunfire. 40-year-old Wendell King was shot and killed at the scene but not before he shot Sgt. Drake.

Drake was taken to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital with a gunshot wound to the lower abdomen.

Shortly before midnight, Ft. Worth police tweeted a prayer vigil. It was a long night, and as Corporal Tracey Knight explained, the shooting of a veteran cop shook up the entire force.

"We all do this job for the love of the job and for the love of the community and we all know what can happen, but it is painful every time it happens across the country and it's especially painful when it happens here at home."

Interim Police Chief Rhonda Robertson, on the job for less than a month, had a hopeful update.

"The great news is his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, he is currently in stable condition."

Turns out this is one lucky cop.
