IRVING, Texas -- An Irving 24-Hour Fitness turned into a crime scene after police say Phillip Roberts stabbed a woman with a screwdriver several times as she worked out Tuesday morning.

“She suffered non-life threatening injuries but was taken to Parkland Hospital for treatment and evaluation," Public Information Officer James McLelland said.

Thankfully, employees were able to hold Roberts down until cops came.

“It appears to be a random act of violence. We’re going to get to the bottom of it," McLelland said.

“It surprised me because It’s always been a quiet place,” Martha Davila said. Davila works out at 24-Hour Fitness, and she’s taking extra precautions.

“Whenever I get out the gym if it’s late at night, I try to look around,” she said.  “I will be more aware of my surroundings.”

But the Gym Jam doesn’t end here.  A man in surveillance video is behind a series of smash and grabs at fitness clubs in Highland Village, Southlake, Colleyville.  Cars at Lifetime Fitness in Flower Mound got hit too.

Cops say he’d wait and watch for female customers who entered the gym without their purse, break in, and use their credit cards before they could be canceled.

“Whether you’re going to be there five minutes, or you’re going to be there all day, people have to take their valuables out of their car or expect that they will be stolen,” Captain Wess Griffin with Flower Mound Police Dept. said.

“I’ve been coming here nine years. This is the first time I hear about it.  I lock my car, take my things,” gym member Odilia Leal, Ph.D. added.
