Make Trail Mix, Dessert Style

It's trail mix, dessert style!  This simple treat is not just empty calories.  The fruit, nuts and high quality dark chocolate offer an array of feel-good affects.  It's delicious too.  Prepare this easy recipe around the holidays to share/gift with loved ones, or after the New Year for a redemptive sweet!


  • 3 (3.5 oz.) 70% cocoa chocolate bars
  • 1 cup mixed nuts (pistachios, cashews, walnuts, almonds, peanuts, macadamias as desired)
  • ½ cup cup dried fruit (raisins and/or dried cranberries, cherries, dates, goji berries, apricots, etc)
  • ¼ tsp salt

Break the chocolate into pieces. Make a double boiler: bring about 1 inch of water to a boil in a small pot. Place a metal bowl on top (don’t let the bottom touch the water). Continue to simmer the water and add the chocolate to the bowl. Stir continuously until the chocolate is melted.

Pour the chocolate into a baking sheet that’s lined with parchment paper. Sprinkle the nuts, fruit and salt over the top. Refrigerate to cool completely, at least one hour. Break the bark into pieces.
