DALLAS, Texas—Ahh, Thanksgiving Eve last-minute shopping; what’s on your list? Perhaps a turkey...maybe two?
“We do actually 90 turkeys,” chef Modesto Robledo said.
Bet your shopping list doesn’t look like this!
-500 Pounds of dressing
-500 Pounds of green beans
-500 Pounds of potatoes
-125 Pounds of cranberry sauce
-125 Pounds of gravy
-2,000 rolls and
-250 pumpkin pies
Wow! That’s a mouthful. Literally! But it’s all going to folks who need it at the Salvation Army Shelter in Dallas. Some of these folks have no place to call home.
“Today is so exciting, we’re going to have 2,000 people from the community coming in tomorrow for a celebration meal,” Jeff Upperman, Associate Director of Operations said.
These seats won’t be empty long!
“Our doors are open to anyone... We’ve been doing this for 26 years...and it’s a big, big operation,” Upperman added.
It’s an operation so big, chefs have been cooking for a whole week! And for chef Modesto Robledo, it’s more that just a job.
“God gave me [the ability] to be here,” Robledo said.
Robledo spent years as a country club chef then made a shift to the other end of the table about six years ago.
“God gave me the time to help these guys, because really, some people don`t have anything to eat, so they can come here and enjoy Thanksgiving day.”
Hey, with a turkey like this, I think they’ll have a fine Turkey day.
“It tastes real good too,” Robledo smiled.
