FORT WORTH, TX —Hey, we all enjoy a freebie here or there, right?  But free drug tests?

“My first initial reaction was uhh… okay.” Joshua Barrett said.

Walgreens on Bryant Irvin Road, along with First Check, MedStar and Fort Worth Emergency Services are dishing out 200 free at-home drug testing kits.

“I think that’s really awesome,” Dawnyale Oliver said.

It’s all part of a national prevention program called Not My Kid.

“I think this should be mandatory to be honest. I think it’s a great idea to have our kids tested,” Barrett added.

“The beauty of it, is that it allows parents to be proactive and prevent their teenagers and children from using drugs,” Dr. Terry McCarthy, Medical Director of the Fort Worth Emergency Services Collaborative and Vice Chief of Staff at Texas Health Resources Harris Methodist Fort Worth, said.

With this program, if a child is doing drugs, parents won’t have to pay to find out.

“I’m a pastor of a church in Irving, so I’m going to take the kit with me and make sure one of the young persons at church who may want to test themselves,” Andrew Jackson said.

At 40 plus dollars a pop, a free kit can go a long way.

“They do it with the whole fear, I’m never going to get caught, my parents won’t shell out $85 to test me,” Barrett said. “But doing it the free way, I think it’s going to scare a lot of kids and make a lot of parents happy.”

Would some call that an invasion of privacy?

“I don’t think it’s a violation of their rights, because they’re kids,” Barrett said.

“Social media has really taken over. I think parents really have more opportunities available to check on their kids,” Oliver added.

First responders say this giveaway might save more than money.  It could save lives.
