DALLAS, TX — The circus is supposed to be a time for family fun. But this tumble was no stunt. A 2-year-old girl is in critical condition after falling over a balcony at the American Airlines Center.

It happened Wednesday night at the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

The girl fell from an upper deck all the way to the concrete plaza. She has not been identified but late Thursday, Children’s Hospital released a statement on behalf of her family.

“We want everyone to know our child is doing well and on the mend, although still being cared for in the ICU. We appreciate the actions of the first responders, both good Samaritans and professionals, who came to our family’s aide. We also thank all those who are concerned and have reached out by thought and prayer. We request that everyone please have respect for our privacy at this time.”

A picture taken at the scene shows a man reaching his hands toward the child and people standing over the toddler below.

Parents like Nick Weikum are taking this accident personally.

“Especially close to my heart because I have a 2-year-old as well. Just holding on to him tight because there`s a lot of people, and after this news, I`m going to be holding a little extra tight today.”

This isn’t the only time good events have gone bad. Back in 2011, a Rangers fan fell catching a foul ball, and later died.

“My hopes and prayers are that the child is alright and that the parents aren’t suffering too much guilt, because that is always something that parents and grandparents think about.”

Let’s hope this tragedy under the big top has a happy ending.
