BENTONVILLE, AR – Arbeit Macht Frei. That’s German for ‘work makes you free.’ Sounds like something to hang up at the office to motivate folks right?
Turns out, this is the phrase on the front gate of the infamous Dachau Concentration Camp. If you didn’t know, that’s the Nazi work camp where tens of thousands were starved to death during World War II.
Walmart knows that now, but not before selling home decoration posters of the gate online.
Geez, how do you say ‘my bad’ in German?
And they aren’t the only offensive offenders. Sears and Amazon sold them, too. All three retailers have since pulled the posters.
However, it seems Walmart is the only one apologizing for it; for now, at least.
“We were horrified to see that this item was on our site. We sincerely apologize, and worked quickly to remove it.”
