As a U.S. Marine Corps pilot, you have to be ready for anything. Sometimes, aviators are not in control while they’re up in the air, and they are at the mercy of their expensive fighter jets.

What seemed like a normal flight mission for Captain William Mahoney, turned into a viral video on YouTube. His takeoff went off without a hitch, but he soon quickly learned that his plane was not working properly; the front landing gear malfunctioned.

Apparently, this sort of thing has been seen before, and the creativity of the crew on the U.S.S Bataan came into play. They placed a large, padded stool on the ship’s deck to assist Mahoney. After hovering for a few minutes, he decided to go for it, and lowered his AV-8B Harrier jet. It was a little bouncy, but Mahoney managed to make a pinpoint landing.

“I had to sit there for a couple of minutes and remember how to shut the jet off. It was a pretty, big relief. I didn’t realize how much I was shaking until I got out of the aircraft,” Capt. Mahoney said.

Regardless of the crazy circumstances, Captain Mahoney has the right stuff.
