Man arrested for allegedly planning to blow up Oklahoma City bank

OKLAHOMA CITY - A suspect allegedly tried to blow up a bank in Oklahoma City on Saturday, the same day as the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

FBI arrested 23-year-old Jerry Drake Varnell, who is set to appear in court on Monday, for to attempting to detonate a vehicle bomb in an alley adjacent to a bank downtown.

According to court documents, Varnell was upset with the government prompting law enforcement to take notice. Varnell loaded what he thought was a bomb into a van and attempted to detonate it.

Thanks to an FBI agent posing as someone who could help Varnell with the attack, Varnell detonated a fake bomb.

 

Varnell faces up to 20 years in prison with a minimum sentence of five years.
