FAIR PARK -- 2016 is a big year for everyone's favorite cowboy, Big Tex. The company that started the "Dickies" brand, Williamson-Dickie Manufacturing Company, unveiled a new custom shirt and pair of jeans for the 55-foot tall landmark.
It takes about ten people to create Big Tex's shirt alone, and that process starts in February. People with the State Fair of Texas "...approve the design and the color theme and things like that, and then we make a human-sized version, and then we blow it up to Big Tex size," said director of technical development with Williamson-Dickey Jill O'Leary.
Not only does Big Tex have to look good, but his outfit needs to hold up to some serious weather problems. "He's out there for more than 30 days in Big Tex Circle. It needs to stand high winds and rain and everything. Dickies takes all of that into consideration when they're putting together his outfit," said Vice President of Public Relations for the State Fair of Texas, Karissa Condoianis
The famous landmark will also be sporting a new belt buckle featuring "2016" on it. This way, people will know what year they were at the fair if they decide to take a picture with the cowboy.
Big Tex will also be "backing the blue" this year with a blue ribbon and Dallas police shield on his chest to pay homage to the five fallen officers who died during a deadly ambush on July 7th.
"It's a tribute for them, as well as their families and all of the other officers affected by that tragedy here in Dallas," said Condoianis. "We have very close relationships with the Dallas police and are very supportive of everything that they do, and also the dart officers. They're very involved out here with the State Fair of Texas, and we wanted to thank them for everything that they do."
Big Tex is ready to go!
"He's a well-dressed man. We always want him to look his best because millions of people walk through those doors, and they always look forward to seeing Big Tex," said O'Leary.
The State Fair of Texas kicks off on September 30th and runs through October 23rd.
