DALLAS -- For this very special Spice of Blythe segment, I visited Fire Station 14 in Oak Cliff, and had the honor of visiting with and celebrating some of the heroes from right in my neighborhood.

September 11 is this weekend, and it's always a good time to think about our first responders, their willingness to put their lives on the line for us, and the fact that for them, anything can happen at any time.

One thing that struck me on my visit was their preparedness.  From spotless, rigorously-tested firefighting gear, to well-used exercise equipment. These guys stay prepared in body, mind, and spirit, for whatever emergency they might be thrown into next.

I had the honor of helping just a little bit with that preparedness, by bringing the station some breakfast.  Food can help fuel someone up, build the body, and restore the mind and soul.

So, my Spice of Blythe today is a reminder to use food to lift each other up.  Especially those heroes among us.
