DALLAS -- It's official! The Dallas County Community College District has appointed police veteran Lauretta Hill as the first Commissioner of Public Safety, Security.

"Growing up in Dallas -- the Oak Cliff part of Dallas -- as a young child, I knew that I wanted to be in some type of service industry," Hill told NewsFix. "My neighborhood didn't have the best relationship with some of the cops in my neighborhood. And I always thought about how I could potentially change that. It's about diversity in thought, gender, age, religion, background; all those things brought together makes a better police department or a better anything," Hill said.

Hill's first day was Monday, Aug. 8.
