GRAPEVINE -- You can catch Pidgey, Bulbasaur, Pikachu, and the rest of the Pokémon gang, but how do you do that and help dogs in the process?
Well, you won't be capturing any Pokémon pups, but you can help shelters and rescues while you catch 'em all playing Pokémon Go.
“I had actually posted on Facebook about Pokémon Go for our adoption events, and someone commented that they were walking for us on Walk for a Dog as well," said Dallas Pets Alive! Technology Director Katie Patterson. "I thought, what a great idea. You can walk for Pokémon and walk for dogs at the same time."
With the Pokémon Go craze hotter than Charizard, dog rescues are capitalizing across the country. Some are welcoming Pokémon players to come walk their dogs while playing the active game on their phones.
Others are taking the next step with the WoofTrax app, Walk for a Dog.
It's this simple: you download the app, put in your name and email address, then choose a shelter or rescue you want to support. Every time you walk, money goes into the pockets of your chosen group.
“Every donation we get goes right back to the animals," said Dallas Pets Alive! Executive Director Leslie Sans. "Often times they have a lot of medical issues that they need taken care of immediately, and that can get very, very expensive."
Rescues like Dallas Pets Alive! are wondering, if you're already stepping out while using Pokémon Go, why not step up and potentially save a Setter or Schnauzer while hunting Psyduck and Squirtle?
“They’re going out and having fun with this game anyway," Sans said. "You may as well click on the app, walk around, take your dog with you and raise some money."
So don't be tentative. The dog your steps save while taming Tentacool could one day become your Cubone catching companion.
