Guess Who’s Back For ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Final Season?

There’s good news and bad news for “Vampire Diaries” fans.

The good news is Kevin Williamson, who co-created the series with current showrunner Julie Plec, is returning to help write Season 8. The last episode written by Williamson was the Season 3 premiere, “The BIrthday.”

But the bad news is that Season 8 has been confirmed to be the final season, and the still-up-in-the-air news is whether star Nina Dobrev will return in some form, though Plec previously said that she has always planned to have Dobrev return for the eventual finale.

“It’s what she and I kind of agreed on when she decided to move on, and it’s what I’ve got in my head … I’m sticking with my side of the plan, which is to bring her back at the very end,” Plec told TV Line back in May.

What else did “Vampire Diaries” fans learn at the SDCC panel? Here are the highlights:

  • There is a final big bad to deal with and it’s “evil herself.” Some fans immediately jumped to “Katherine,” but it could also be something the characters have never faced before.
  • The season is a homecoming, of sorts. They’re headed back to Mystic Falls.
  • However, Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig) is still in much the same place as he was at the end of Season 7. He has to let go of Mystic Falls and find his own life.
  • Caroline’s (Candice King) kids will play a part in Season 8, fairly early on. But everyone is pretty mum about Caroline’s love life.
  • There is mind control going on between Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Enzo (Michael Malarkey).
  • Bonnie is not in good shape. She’s “crumbling” and “at ground zero.”

The final season of “The Vampire Diaries” premieres Oct. 21 on The CW.
