When Arrow Season 4 came to an end, Oliver (Stephen Amell) and Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) weren't able to rekindle their romantic relationship. Their friendship, however, was on the road to recovery after Felicity called off their engagement.
"That relationship is much more important than the romantic element of it," Amell tells Zap2it. It's a refrain Amell has been slowly breaking to fans since the couple dubbed Olicity split on the show. He previously explained, "I think that it’s important to remember that relationships on the show don’t have to be only defined by romance. Oliver and Felicity could have a wonderful, fulfilling, dynamic relationship and not be together, right?"
That doesn't mean a little love between the two isn't on the way once again, though. As show-runner Wendy Mericle says, "When we find them at the top of the season, that bond has grown stronger. The Olicity of where that relationship goes and whether that goes back to being romantic or not, again we're going to see where that takes us. Maybe that chemistry will overtake them again and we'll put them back together, maybe not."
Whatever the case though, as Emily Bett Rickards says, the fact that these two are a former couple definitely shades their friendship moving forward.
"They both have very strong opinions about how things should progress and they're not going to dance around what their opinions are. They're more likely to be a little more cutthroat at that point because you know the person so well," she explains. "Trying not to let your emotions override the goal at hand, I think, is always difficult."
As for Oliver, while his relationship with Felicity may slowly -- oh so slowly -- be getting back on track, there's another connection he's very focused on in Season 5.
"The mission supersedes everything. The mission has to do with Star City," Amell teases. "Star City is Oliver's most important relationship on the show."
Arrow returns Wednesday, October 5, at 7 p.m. on CW33.
