LOS ANGELES — As the #OscarsSoWhite drama gains momentum, we’re going to take it way back. From the vault, we uncovered the moment Eddie Murphy ripped the Oscars for its lack of diversity — back in 1988.

And he did it ON STAGE at the 60th Academy Awards before presenting the nominees for Best Picture.

Eddie told the audience, in part:

“I just feel we have to be recognized as a people. I just want you to know, I’m going to give this award, but black people will not ride the caboose of society and we will not bring up the rear anymore… and I want you to recognize us.”

His message resonates today as stars like Spike Lee, Jada Pinkett Smith, Snoop Dogg and others boycott the Oscars because there are no black nominees in the four major acting categories. Not one.
