VALLEY RANCH — As if this season couldn’t get any worse, head coach Jason Garrett dropped this bomb early Wednesday, “We’re actually going to put Dez Bryant on injured reserve.”
Yep, Dez will require another surgery on his ailing foot plus surgery on his ankle.
My, how things have changed for last season’s Executive of the Year Jerry Jones. The person who was given much of the credit for last year’s success now appears to be taking the blame for everything. Like going into this season with Brandon Weeden as the primary backup to an injury prone Tony Romo.
He’s also under fire for possibly rushing Romo and Dez back on the field since both have suffered injury déjà vu.
Another decision is sure to be questioned this Sunday — play for the win or play for the draft?
Those players getting a chance to prove themselves as starters, like quarterback Kellen Moore, are saying all the right things, “It’s a huge opportunity, you don’t know how many of these you ever get so you take them for as much value as you can.”
Receiver Brice Butler echoed the same, “Guys are still going out there and fighting so everybody has that mindset of going out there and beating the Redskins.”
But if the Cowboys lose, they’ll set themselves up for a possible number 2 overall pick; a draft position that could be crucial, not only for getting a viable back-up for Romo but an outright successor once his career is over… whenever that may be.
So, on Sunday, don’t be surprised if the cheers you hear during a Cowboys screw-up are coming from the home crowd.
