natural hairNEW YORK – When it comes to the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, there are certain things you can expect. Plenty of lingerie, and plenty of skin. One thing you don’t see plenty of are black women ripping the runway with their natural hair.

That is, until now.

Angolan model Maria Borges is the first black model to strut the Victoria’s Secret stage, rocking her natural fro. And for those who don’t know, it’s kind of a big deal, especially for black women who continually endure criticism from society when they ditch their extensions and wear their hair in its natural state – and it isn’t straight.

In an interview with Essence Magazine Borges explained, “I was nervous, but I had to do it. When they said ‘yes,’ I didn’t expect it, but I was so happy!”

The result? A heap of praise, not only from members of the natural hair community but from all over the world.

Hey, the show may not air until December, but it’s already safe to say it’s one for the history books.
