DALLAS - His on-court achievements have already immortalized Mavs star Dirk Nowitzki within the DFW community. But on Wednesday Dirk was given a special recognition for his achievements off the court.

Dirk was honored with the first ever community excellence award by the Heart of Dallas Young Professionals. The award recognizes the charitable impact of the Dirk Nowitzki Foundation.

Founded in 2001 the organization helps children around the world with issues concerning education and health. But Dirk is used to being in the spotlight when it comes to his charitable acts. In 2007 the NBA gave him the NBA Community Assist Award for his work within the community.

Dirk`s foundation was presented with a $10,000 check on behalf of the Heart of Dallas Young Professionals and Bud Light.

With so many stories about player`s off-field problems dominating headlines, it`s refreshing to see one of DFW`s biggest stars get attention for making a positive difference in his community. Congrats Dirk!
