DALLAS -- When Emma showed up at the shelter as a stray, she had “straight to doggie death row” written all over her.

“She looked terrible,” says Holly Sampson, marketing director for Dallas Pets Alive! “Not only did she have heartworms, but she had a cherry eye in both eyes and it looked horrific.”

Cherry eyes have a simple fix, but it requires surgery and Emma wasn’t going to get it unless Dallas Pets Alive! could get her out of the shelter.

“We have wonderful vets, and they were able to do the surgery. It makes a huge difference,” says Sampson.

With her eyes cleared up, Emma was looking a lot friendlier.

“She loves everyone she has ever met, every dog and every person,” says Sampson.

Melissa Flick and Paul Cihak knew Emma would fit right in at their country home, “She looked like a cow. She was just cute," says Cihak.

Emma even made friends with a stray cat, whose got the exact opposite spots as she does. Hey, they say opposites attract, right?

“Anytime we open the door, Emma runs out and they just play and snuggle. It's really cute,” says Flick.

A new friend, a new family, and getting rid of those scary cherry eyes will cheer up any dogs.

“She’s just so happy,” says Cihak. “She just loves to give you kisses!"
