DALLAS -- In DFW, we don't wait until Thanksgiving to cheat on our diets. Thanks to the State Fair, most people have to start loosening their belts way before then. And with anything you could ever imagine getting the deep fried treatment, who can blame them?
The State Fair of Texas announced the finalists Tuesday for its Big Tex Choice Awards and gave us all a sneak peek at this year's food line up.
Be prepared to drop some tickets for what might be the fanciest cuisine out of this year's selection -- "Chicken Fried Lobster with Champagne Gravy."
But not to be outdone is a chef who has a dish called "Deep Fried Alligator's Egg Nest."
"It's alligator meat that's been mixed with Monterrey Jack cheese, jalapenos, onions, garlic, red bell peppers and bread crumbs," creator Cassy Jones said.
Up next is "Lone Star Pork Handle."
"What we do is, we take a hand cut bone-in pork chop, we marinate it in a cinnamon chipotle pork rub, dip it in a beer batter with Texas' own Lone Star beer," explained Justin Martinez.
One chef actually has two entries in the final eight this year -- "Cowboy Corn Crunch" and "Smoky Bacon Margarita." We're not kidding.
"People love bacon! We have it for breakfast, we have it for lunch, we have it for dinner, now cocktails," creator Isaac Rousso said.
This list is rounded out by Fernie's Holy Moly Carrot Cake, Fried Beer-Battered Buffalo and Pretzel Crusted Pollo Queso.
You can be one of the first people to get a taste of the new belt busters on August 30th at the Big Tex Choice Awards. Tickets are available only for $100.
But just remember to pack the essentials -- TUMS!
