DALLAS, TX -- To say it’s been a tense and terrifying day for Dallas PD would be an understatement.
The department’s headquarters, and its cops, came under fire just after 12:30 Saturday morning; the apparent targets of a crazed gunman.
A witness caught the crime scene on cam. The video clearly shows the suspect’s van ram into a cop car and start shooting.
An exchange of gunfire can be heard echoing throughout the street. DPD posted pics of the damage.
The van then took off, and lead cops about 10-miles south east of the city to a restaurant parking lot in neighboring Hutchins.
"While in the parking lot, there was another exchange of gunfire between the suspect and the officers," Dallas Police Chief David Brown said. "Squad cars were struck during that exchange.”
As SWAT surrounded the suspect and blocked off the roads. Back at police HQ, cops found four suspicious duffle bags planted around the building.
"There’s an employee parking , the front part of police headquarters," Chief Brown explained. "Then, there’s a side street called Belleview, so the bags were dispersed throughout the front and sides of police headquarters.”
Get this: the Chief says one of those bags contained a pipe bomb. The department’s explosives unit safely detonated the threat and avoided potential danger.
Cops also evacuated surrounding residents and near-by businesses, as they combed the crime scene.
Almost 12-hours after the crazy crime started, the standoff drew to a close after cops blew-out the suspect’s window.
The miracle here? Not a single cop was hurt.
Hey, we know cops have gotten a bad rap lately, but nobody wants to see a crime like this happen to our boys in blue.
