SURPRISE, AZ — Rangers fans, brace yourselves: this isn't the news you want to hear.
Just as spring training is in full swing in Arizona, it looks like ace pitcher Yu Darvish may be out for the season.
He left Thursday`s Cactus League game early with tricep stiffness. Yeah, we should've known then it wasn't going to end well.
On Saturday, results from his MRI confirmed: Yu has partially torn ligaments in his elbow.
Best case: He`s gone four months. Worst case: sayanora, 2015.
Back in Arlington, fans felt the blow of the announcement.
“On the drive here to take a tour and I hear he could be having Tommy John, out for the year, it was crushing," Rangers fan Nicholas Tanner said.
You can forgive the fans for feeling the sting of this loss, especially after enduring last year`s injury plagued campaign, but don`t expect the new skipper to be on base with the pessimism.
“We can either crumble, give in, which I can promise you that's not in my DNA,” manager Jeff Banister said. “Or, we can come together, galvanize, become stronger.”
Even GM John Daniels is pitching positivity. “You can name a dozen off the top of your head of teams that had very good years some of whom won the World Series, without key components.”
Well, we applaud the optimism; but for most Rangers fans, Yu's injury isn`t a half full or half empty scenario... it`s all empty.
