SEATTLE — Think before you tweet. The Seattle Seahawks just learned that the hard way following an epic Martin Luther King Day tweet.

It has since been deleted, but the tweet read —  “We shall overcome. #MLKDay,” and included a photo of the team’s quarterback, Russell Wilson, with one of Dr. King’s quotes: “Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”

That first quote, “We shall overcome,” is why folks are calling this tweet a failure.

As the site, Awful Announcing so eloquently put it, “Because you can’t fully celebrate your team’s comeback victory in the NFC Championship Game without comparing it to the struggle for civil rights.”

Ouch.

The Super Bowl-bound team apologized two hours after sending the tweet, explaining it did not mean to compare the athletes’ journey toward the championship to Dr. King’s half-century-long battle for equality.
