(CNN) — Peter Theo Curtis, the American recently released from captivity in Syria, told reporters in Massachusetts on Wednesday: “I had no idea when I was in prison so much effort was being expended on my behalf.” He said he was grateful for those who worked for more than two years to try to secure his release. “I’m overwhelmed by emotion,” he said in a brief statement.

Curtis returned to the United States on Tuesday, two days after Syrian captors released him, according to a statement from his family. Curtis is believed to have been captured in October 2012 and held by al-Nusra Front, a Syrian rebel group with ties to al Qaeda.
