Arlington– It wasn’t the outcome family members wanted after their 84-year-old loved one was reported missing.
Late Saturday night, Arlington police found Dahabo Elmi’s body in a canal less than half a mile from her apartment. Elmi had been missing more than 12 hours.
Sgt. Jeffrey Houston with the Arlington Police Department described her as “an elderly female in her early 80’s with a possible onset of Alzheimer’s or dementia.”
Concerned family members told police the elderly woman was last seen that morning as she went for a walk near her apartments on Mayfield Villa Drive. She never came back home.
As the search extended into the evening, officers got a call about a body matching Elmi’s description.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner positively identified the woman. Her cause of death is still pending toxicology results.
“It’s a tragic event. Anytime someone goes missing and you find them deceased it’s never a good situation no matter what the cause is,” Houston said.
