FORT WORTH—It was chaos early Wednesday morning at La Jolla Terrace Apartments.
“It was a girl running, her back was on fire,” resident Vivian Fields said. “Someone jumped out the window and broke their legs. It was a big ball of red smoke. Terrible.”
“My son was bamming on the door, ‘hurry up and get out!’” another resident said.
The fire was so bad, firefighters had to get out. It destroyed a dozen units and damaged dozens more.
“It’s nothing left,” Fields said. “It’s nothing left. Those buildings burned to the ground.”
“I go open the front door and there was a wall of fire,” said mother, Tanika Turner.
“When I woke up and started putting my shoes on, I heard something like ‘boom,’” her 5-year-old daughter Amora said. “And she pulls me out the door and bam! I see fire.”
Amora’s mom, dad, and two dogs all ran to safety.
“If it weren’t for Jesus, I don’t even know if we would’ve woke up. Somebody made me wake her up early,” Turner added.
No lives were claimed, but four people were taken to the hospital and a fifth burn victim was treated at the scene.
The Fort Worth Fire Department is looking for what caused this enormous fire.
The Red Cross was on scene helping these displaced families. Some only escaped with the clothes they were wearing. Now, all these families have no answers–and nowhere to go.
