In 1986, this patriarch of the Grateful Dead went into a five-day diabetic coma, forcing his band to withdraw from its current tour. Nine years later, he would die of a heart attack in a rehabilitation center.

And on this day in 2004, this singer-songwriter died at age 73.  While his life story was told on the silver screen by Oscar winner Jamie Foxx, he himself was no stranger to movie appearances — he portrayed himself in the 1980 hit The Blues Brothers.  You want more trivia? Okay, how’s this: In addition to winning 17 Grammy Awards, he fathered 12 children with 9 different women. Diapers and divorces will certainly make you sing the blues.
